My first talk at an event open to the community

Authors

It has been a while since this blog's first post, and following this idea of starting new things, next Monday (25/10/2021) I will give my first talk at an event open to the community. I am very excited about this opportunity, and I hope it will be the first of many. The event is called JS-Vix, and the idea is to hold a monthly meeting open to the community to talk about technologies in the JavaScript ecosystem, without limiting it to a particular framework.

The topic of my talk will be Performance and Optimization with NextJS. It is a topic I have been interested in studying over the last few weeks, and there is nothing better than preparing a talk to learn more about a subject. This would not be my first talk: I had many opportunities to speak at internal events at the company where I worked. There was a strong culture of organizing internal meetups and giving developers the opportunity to develop soft skills as well as improve their technical abilities. I have always been very shy about "putting myself in front of an audience," if I can put it that way, and I think that in my last job I was able to overcome much of that shyness about public speaking and expose myself to more situations outside my comfort zone. But I had never given a talk at an event open to the community, and I am very excited about that exchange of energy.

My idea is to discuss some of the points I have been studying about performance and optimization with NextJS, and also show practical examples of how to apply these concepts. Some of the points I will cover are: Lazy Loading and Code Splitting, Pre-rendering (SSG, SSR), Image Optimization, Cache and Caching Strategies (SWR — Stale While Revalidate), Tree Shaking, the Google LightHouse tool, and some coding best practices related to optimization and performance. I will make the presentation slides available, and I hope to write one or two articles about the subject. I intend to publish those technical articles here and on dev.to; I am still thinking about it.

Those are the updates for now. Until next time!
